At The Albany we endeavour to provide an environment where all students feel valued and welcome. School Attendance is the baseline factor in determining student progress and success within academic pursuits.
We have an expectation that students maintain an annual attendance figure between 95-100%. Attendance below this level can lead to excessive days of learning lost meaning that students develop gaps in their overall subject knowledge.
There is a strong link between good school attendance and achieving consistent and sustainable academic and other educationally linked success. Students that have an annual attendance figure of above 95% on average achieve 1 or 2 grades higher in all subject areas than students with attendance below 95%.
Reporting Absences – First day of absence
Any student who is absent from school at the morning (Tutorial) or afternoon (Period 5) registration periods will have their absence recorded as unauthorised until a reason is provided.
First Day of Absence
On the morning of the first day of absence please contact the school by telephone 01708 441537 ext 130 or e-mail email@example.com providing information regarding the reason for absence and possible return date to school.
Upon return to school a parental letter detailing the reason for absence will need to be handed to the students Form Tutor.
Reporting absence - Medical Appointment during school day
Whilst the school understands that it is not always possible to arrange appointments out of the school day, it is expected that students, where possible, will attend school around the appointment and not take the whole morning, afternoon or full day off.
The school will require evidence of the medical appointment to authorise an absence. All students should take their appointment information (appointment card/letter), along with a letter from parents/carers with details of late arrival into/early departure from school, for authorisation to the Attendance officer. Failure to supply the requested information may result in a student’s absence being recorded as unauthorised.
When leaving the school site for approved reasons students are expected to sign out at the Attendance Office and sign back in on return.
Request for Leave of Absence
As a school we actively discourage parents from taking their children out of school during term time as absences can have a negative effect on progress. In normal circumstances the school will not authorise absence for holiday or extended leave during term time. However, each case will be dealt with individually and in exceptional circumstances approval maybe given, taking into consideration the impact on students learning, stage of learning, attendance record, time of year and individual family circumstances.
Where a parent/carer wishes to take their child on holiday or extended leave during term time an official application should be made using the schools ‘Request for Leave of Absence’ form.
It is a legal requirement for parents/carers to obtain permission from the school before removing the child to take any leave during term time. Parents may be issued with a Penalty Notice (£120 per parent per child) if they take their children out of school for holiday or extended leave without authorisation.
Punctuality – Registration of lateness
AM Registration – The school day starts at 8:30am and registers are marked by 8:35am
Students will receive a late mark if they are not in Assembly, Form Time or Lesson by that time.
PM Registration – The afternoon session of school starts at 2pm (Mon-Thurs) and 1:40pm (Friday) – registers will be taken within 2/3 minutes of the lesson start time.
Students will receive a late mark if they are not in the appropriate classroom or lesson by that time.
When a student is late to school or registration they must report to the Attendance Officer and sign-in. If a student is late to school or registration they will receive an automatic 15 minute detention at the end of school and additional sanctions will be applied in accordance with the schools late procedure.
