  • The art and design department aims to encourage independent use of imagination and consideration for artistic techniques, processes and communication.
  • Pupils will learn to understand, analyse and interpret artwork in order to apply learnt skills appropriately as they develop throughout the three years of KS3.
  • This knowledge and ability to make decisions will increase confidence across the subject specialisms and provide a solid platform to pursue the KS4 course if chosen as a GCSE.

KS3: Years 7, 8, 9

Pupils explore visual, tactile and other sensory experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. They work with traditional and new media, developing confidence, competence, imagination and creativity. They learn to appreciate and value images and artefacts across times and cultures, and to understand the contexts in which they were made. Pupils reflect critically on their own and other people’s work, judging quality, value and meaning. They learn to think and act as artists, craftspeople and designers, working creatively and intelligently.

  • Year 7, Contours, Mixing and Blending when using colour. Materials: Watercolour, Pencil, Acrylic and Clay.
  • Year 8, Narrative Photography-Rules of composition, Digital Manipulation and development of painting skills.
  • Year 9, Printing Methods-awareness of Formal Elements and surface design.

KS4: Years 10 and 11

The GCSE course consists of two bodies of work in total, a portfolio unit set by the teacher and the examination unit set by the exam board. The content and mode of study will be set and structured but allow for independent development and research of the brief. Pupils can then choose an idea or concept that is of interest to them and explores, through the artistic practice, which best suits their intention. Having refined observations and considered visual elements a final realisation is produced, unit 1 during a five hour mock examination and unit 2 during ten hour examination.

  • Course Assessment – Portfolio Unit 1 = 60%
  • Examination Unit 2 = 40%

In art during year 7, 8 and 9 we learn many different art techniques, about different artists and how we can use art in our lives. Now I am in year 10 we are basing artwork on a theme of our choosing and using many of the different techniques we were taught but in a way that suits our styles. We are also starting to explore and develop new processes that help communicate our ideas
