English as an additional language

Please inform the school/the inclusions department if your child has learnt/is learning English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Even if your child speaks fluent/good English and will not require additional support, we would like you to share this information with us because it may mean that your could;
  • Be entered for a GCSE in their home language (mother tongue). View our Exam poster to see more about GCSE's
  • Be invited to support other pupils who speak the same language at our school. View our Peer buddy document to see more about supporting other students
  • Be invited to take part in activities to recognise and celebrate the range of languages spoken by the pupils at our school.

Defining a student's first language

It is proposed that, for the purposes of obtaining language information for the School Census 2007, a child’s ‘first language’ should be recorded.

A first language other than English should be recorded where a child was exposed to this language during early development and continues to be exposed to this language in the home or in the community.

If a child was exposed to more than one language (which may include English) during early development, a language other than English should be recorded, irrespective of the child’s proficiency in English.

In the case of an older pupil who is no longer exposed to the first language in the home, and who now uses another language, the school should consult with the pupil or parent to determine which language should be recorded.

English as an additional language within The Albany is supported by the London Education Authority.
